Description

Welcome to the heart of the Pays de Herve, Aubel, where the Nyssen family have been carrying out their family tradition of making artisanal products for 12 generations at the Siroperie Artisanale d'Aubel. Passion, tradition, expertise, authenticity, quality – these are just some of the words that could describe the day-to-day work ethic of the Nyssen family, with son Claudy and grandson Antoine taking over from grandpa Joseph, who is busy enjoying his retirement.

Their prized asset?  A delicious natural syrup made by reducing the juice of pears and apples over a high heat, using no added sugar or other ingredients. Using old-school production techniques and respecting for their old family recipe, the syrup is exceptionally smooth, with an authentic flavour like no other! Whether for breakfast, as a snack or simply lathered on bread, it can be enjoyed at any time of day. It is also a perfect accompaniment to cheese, and is widely used in many recipes.

With their use of only the freshest, in-season fruit, production is seasonal. This means that, during the months of September and October, the syrup factory is working flat out to produce as much syrup as possible, making enough to last the whole year, or longer. Claudy, who oversees the marketing of the family syrup, has even extended the range to include a spread, ‘Pom’Aubel’ (a delicious apple juice) and a wide range of jams.

Each visit includes a tour of the facilities (free every Saturday at 11am), a look at the machines and a presentation of the manufacturing process. You will then watch a short film with some additional information from Antoine, the youngest member of the family. And, of course, you get sample and purchase the many products in the shop.

As an Ardennes-étape customer, you are entitled to a free tasting session. Simply present your Activity Pass at the shop. This can be done either during or outside of your guided tour. Top tip: it's best to let Antoine know you're coming so that he can get everything ready for your tasting session.
