White façades, blue rooftops, rolling green valleys all around. Nobressart is the kind of village you drive into, step out for a moment… and only realise hours later that you're still walking.

This is not just one of the most beautiful villages in Wallonia. It may well be the best-kept secret in the province of Luxembourg. Nestled in four small valleys within the municipality of Attert, the village has an almost southern charm you wouldn't quite expect in the Ardennes.

Here you'll find old farmhouses and fermettes from the 19th century, their walls covered in a light coat of white, sometimes pink or grey plaster. Together with the blue rooftops and the gently rolling green landscape, they paint a picture that seems to have drifted in straight from the hills of Lorraine.

Wandering without a destination

Nobressart was made for those who love to stroll without purpose. Two main streets branch off into small hamlets where narrow lanes wind between the houses.

Everywhere you breathe in grass, wood, and stillness. No tourist crowds, no terrace full of day-trippers. This village moves at its own pace, and invites you to do the same for a while.

Deep in the forests around Herbeumont, where the canopy is so dense that daylight barely filters through, a hidden reward awaits. A narrow forest path, one last climb… and then the landscape opens up. You find yourself on Le Rocher du Chat, a natural rocky plateau with a sweeping panorama over the Semois valley. Welcome to one of the best-kept secrets of the Ardennes.

The name? The rock owes it to an old legend about Monseigneur du Chat, a tyrant who from this very spot attempted to seduce the nymph Semois — without success. His attempt ended in an involuntary plunge into the river, and ever since, so the story goes, cats have had an aversion to water.

But it is above all the surroundings that leave a lasting impression. The Domaine des Épioux, over 1,700 hectares of unspoilt nature between Chiny and Herbeumont, wraps you in a silence rarely found elsewhere. Vast forests, five ponds, a biodiversity that makes you forget you are still in Belgium.

For those seeking silence

Le Rocher du Chat is not a place where you run into dozens of other hikers. No busy car park or signposted selfie spots here. Just the sound of the wind through the treetops, a panorama you have all to yourself, and the space to simply be, for a while.

A different face of the Semois — wilder, quieter, undiscovered. Which is precisely what makes it so worthwhile.

At 503 metres above sea level, where the forests are so vast they bring Canada to mind rather than Belgium, lies La Croix-Scaille. A sea of trees spanning 9,000 hectares on the Belgian-French border, with at its heart a spectacular observation tower that lifts you high above the treetops.

La Croix-Scaille is a plateau in the Gedinne region, and the fifth highest point in Belgium. The landscape here is unlike anywhere else in the Ardennes: wider, wilder and more unspoilt. There are no picturesque villages around the corner - just dense forest as far as the eye can see.

At the centre of the plateau stands the Tour du Millénaire, a spectacular 60-metre-high observation tower shaped like an hourglass. The steel structure houses three viewing platforms at 15, 30 and 45 metres. With each level, the silence deepens and the views grow broader.

A feeling of boundless space

At the top, 45 metres up, a 360° panorama over the sweeping forests of the Ardennes Croix-Scaille awaits. Anyone standing here immediately understands why visitors describe it as having a "Canadian feel."

The scale of the landscape, the endless treetops, the silence - it is an experience rarely found elsewhere in Belgium. La Croix-Scaille is also an ideal starting point for long forest walks through one of the country's best-preserved natural areas. Enjoy!
